Very sad. Amy is a biographical documentary about the life of Amy Winehouse. It starts off when she was a teen and showed her early singing talent to her friend trying to get her into the music business to her rise to stardom. Plus how the music industry helped lead to her destruction. The film relies upon interviews with Winehouse and her friends, along with personnel videos. The videos are the real highlight as they show Amy in her own element not sitting around talking to reporters or talk show hosts.
Other times it shows that her boyfriends caused her lots of problems. One of her close friends believed that was a big mistake because it was right on the cusp of her big breakthrough where the whole world would be focused upon her and all that pressure led to more issues.

And many people don’t have “issues” and a small percent become addicts. So, if you can accept that it’s not the “issues” then you have to accept that addiction is as random as certain cancers, often with a genetic component.
I have to say though, watching Amy’s face when she meets and sings with her idol, Tony Bennett – that was the ultimate. She so clearly adored him and it was evident – this wasn’t mugging for the camera. I loved how patient Tony was with her, when she started freaking out, worried she was ‘wasting his time’. He was the father figure she yearned for. It was just too little too late. The heartbreaking part is that so many people were far more invested in Amy “going out there and performing” than in doing what was best for Amy.
And Amy’s “father”, Mitch, absolving himself of responsibility, by saying it was up to Amy is absurd. That is a rationalization of the first order. He just didn’t want to stop the cash cow. So to see him speaking about addiction, is like watching John Hinckley lecture on mental health and gun control.
So many booed and made fun of Amy towards the end. But, even as it was happening IRL, all I saw was a sick person in desperate need of help. If it were cancer or Parkinson’s or traumatic brain injury, nobody would dare joke or laugh. But addiction? Because people think that’s a choice, then somehow its ok? The world lost the most amazing and innovative Jazz singer in years.
But all too few grieved the loss of Amy the girl? I didn’t feel better or uplifted or really much of anything after watching this well-done documentary other than grim sadness. There was no happy underlying message or even anything remotely redeeming. It was just the visual and auditory experience of unnecessary loss. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Amy gives us an insight to the uncontrollable downfall of fame. A biographical documentary depicting both the early personal life and musical career of Amy Winehouse, who unfortunately overdosed on drugs in Biopics are difficult to review, you have to refrain from judging the person that is being portrayed and just review the documentary itself.
However, before I start I would like to say that Amy Winehouse was incredibly talented. It really was a shame what she went through in terms of her own personal demons. She was clearly infectiously likeable and down to earth, devoted to her one passion.
This documentary creatively captures her fragility through the use of old recordings, montages of pictures with onscreen lyrics to accompany them and countless awards ceremonies for all the recognition she rightfully deserved.
This is a statement. To explore and convey the desirable disease of fame. It can corrupt the most innocent of souls. The influx of money, power and popularity can enhance the accessibility of drugs and alcohol. In Amy’s case, it destroyed her. Not solely, the film takes the time to go through her stages of early depression before she took the world by storm. It’s utterly moving and powerful. A young woman susceptible to external influences. She didn’t know what she was doing, it was out of her control.
The way the media covered her story rather enraged me, with several chat shows and news reports mocking her. It’s important to acknowledge that the media only saw one side to her, but it’s a shame they reduced her to a mess. As empathetic as this is, we also celebrate her work by listening and watching her perform. Director Asif Kapadia dynamically balanced her lows and highs to portray an enigmatic young woman who was taken from us far too early. The runtime could’ve been slightly shorter to maintain a tighter biopic, but it’s a fitting tribute and I highly recommend you watch this.
Like me, you don’t need to be a fan of her to appreciate the complexity and intellectual narrative of this documentary. This is a compelling – and heartbreaking – film about a wonderful talent, and someone I would call a vulnerable lost soul who appeared to be too trusting and was unashamedly exploited by people who perhaps should have done more to protect her. It provides an insight in to her true friendships and relationships, and uncompromisingly illustrates how parasitic some people can be.
There are lovely moments in this film where Amy is timid but shows her true talent, such as when she’s recording with her idol, Tony Bennett; and there are raw moments that should never have happened to such a young, vulnerable, talented woman.
Not an easy film to watch, but such a good one, and the documentary film makers need to be applauded for their courage in bringing this most successful film to the screen.
The DVD extras are superb, and I would recommend this film to all true film fans, and old and soon to be new fans of Amy. Watching this made me very very angry with the paparazzi and media. To hound someone this fragile with mental health issues, you are the lowest of the low.

PillPack Pharmacy Simplified. For many of us who have children who don’t want to move out, this may be hard to comprehend. Again, I wonder, what was going on in that house where at the age of 13, all young Amy Winehouse can dream about is moving out? I’ve searched, but cannot find out who Amy’s stepfather was. But there are millions of Amy’s out there suffering, most just don’t have an extraordinary talent like Amy. And when Amy’s star began rising her father, Mitch, was suddenly there all the time?
My “Momdar” quickly elevated to Defcon 5. After watching the film, I’m not really sure there was anyone that didn’t want Amy for something. And everyone deserves to have a “safe human” – One person who only cares about you. Who doesn’t weigh how much money you will or won’t be bringing in or about contracts and returns. I believe, at a minimum, that should be her parents. But neither parents seemed all that interested in Amy – until she started to become famous.
But other than that, she was ordinary girl who was an addict. Sadly, despite all the advances in cancer and HIV treatment and other illnesses, there has been minimal improvement in the deadly disease that is called addiction. Many who see this will think that her “issues” caused her addiction. They would likely be wrong. Which is why science requires the scientific method – to eliminate judgments based on anecdotal information, which is how addiction treatment has historically been approached and more probably why it has failed so dismally.

What a disgusting way to make a living, out of another human being’s misery.
